Gruta Rei do Mato, nearby the city of Sete Lagoas, in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is one of the most interesting caves in the area around Belo Horizonte, and probably, the world.

Its insides are visually striking for anyone, being full of different and vivid colors thanks to its lighting, and possessing intriguing sceneries that make it a great touristic attraction. Among the many cave systems in the surroundings, Gruta Rei do Mato is by far the most fascinating.

The cave has four chambers, all filled with rarities and natural beauty, stalactites, stalagmites and rimstone dams. You can even see two intact, parallel, nearly identical columns, formed by the calcium carbonate crystals of calcite, which measure 13 meters in length. Besides from the rock formations, there are also cave drawings and painting dating back more than 6,000 years ago.

In the third chamber there are relevant rock formations, called “sorvetão”, which means “big ice cream”, which are formed by stalactites that took about 20,000 to form. Gruta Rei do Mato broke a record for being the cave with the biggest stalactite in the world.

With several conveniences in its favor, it is one of the most enjoyable trips you could take; perfect for those who aren’t scared of the unknown and the studious of nature. Gruta Rei do Mato itself don’t offer accommodations, but a reception are for tourist, an auditorium, an exhibition room and, of course, restrooms. Also, a terminal, a snack bar and an infirmary to provide first aids.

You can stay in the nearby cities, in which there are a wide variety of hostels and hotels, as they are touristic cities, and then visit the cave by bus or cab, any vehicle in general, as it is located at the edge of the BR-040 highway, exactly, in the KM 472.
